چکیده

Malaria, an often-fatal disease, has been a worldwide plague for several thousand years. The discovery of the efficacy of substances present in the bark of various cinchona trees, native to the Andes, provided some relief. A real antimalarial drug was not available until 1820, when Joseph Baptiste Caventou (1795-1877) and Josephe Pelletier (1788-1842) isolated quinine from the bark (1). Eighty years after their discovery, a statue honoring these chemists was erected in Paris (Fig. 1).

The fluorescence Quenching Study of Quinine in Presence of Some Anions

The quenching of quinine fluorescence intensity in the presence of some anions in aqueous solution at ambient temperature has been investigated. The quenching is found to be collisional or dynamical in nature. This study reveals the order of two groups of quencher: NaI > NaBr > NaCl > NaF and K2Cr2O7 > KMnO4 >Na2SO4 > NaClO3. Increasing anion size in the both groups leads to an  increase in the...

Sensing of enantiomeric excess in chiral carboxylic acids.

Cinchona alkaloids (quinine, quinidine, cinchonine, cinchonidine) alkylated at N(1) with chloromethyl anthracene can serve as fluorescent sensors for chiral carboxylic acids. These cinchona ammonium salts are shown to bind chiral carboxylic acids while displaying an increase in fluorescence intensity that can be utilized in determination of enantiomeric excess (ee). Sensor arrays composed of fo...

Quininium Malates: Partial Chiral Discrimination via Diastereomeric Salt Formation

Quinine was employed as a resolving agent for racemic malic acid. The resultant product was a quininium salt containing 75 % of the D-malate anion. Quinine was also crystallized with pure Land D-malic acids and the structures of the resulting diastereomeric salts were elucidated. The crystal packings were analyzed in terms of their non-bonded interactions and the conformation of the quinine, wh...

Enhancement of gustatory neural response to salts following adaptation of frog tongue to quinine-HCI.

After a frog tongue was adapted to 0.001 M quinine-HCl(Q-HCl), a change in the gustatory neural responses to salts was investigated. The initial phasic response to a variety of salt solutions such as 0.1 M NaCl, KCl, LiCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 was greatly potentiated as a result of the Q-HCl adaptation. A weaker enhancement of the response to salts was observed after the tongue was adapted to deioni...

Polymer-supported Cinchona alkaloid-derived ammonium salts as recoverable phase-transfer catalysts for the asymmetric synthesis of alpha-amino acids.

Alkaloids such as cinchonidine, quinine and N-methylephedrine have been N-alkylated using polymeric benzyl halides or co-polymerized and then N-alkylated, thus affording a series of polymer-supported chiral ammonium salts which have been employed as phase-transfer catalysts in the asymmetric benzylation of an N-(diphenylmethylene)glycine ester. These new polymeric catalysts can be easily recove...
